This technology concept pertains to vehicles that have their repairs done autonomously, or without a person having to drive the vehicle to a car repair shop or dealership. This could happen one of two ways:
- Autonomous Tow Trucks – this way would include tow trucks that would automatically pick up a broken car and deliver it to the appropriate vehicle repair shop. The autonomous tow truck would be operated by Artificial Intelligence, so it would be completely driverless. A vehicle in distress would signal a uniform dispatch system through the vehicle owner’s insurance company, that would then dispatch the autonomous tow truck. The tow truck would have advanced robotics, which would allow it to maneuver into tight locations or pick up a vehicle that is off the side of a road, or even a totaled car for delivery to a scrap shop or to the insurance company’s lot for inspection.
- Autonomous Self-Servicing Vehicles – this way would have the vehicle its self-drive itself, using Artificial Intelligence, to the nearest repair shop. This would mean that the vehicle was able to operate enough that it would not be a burden on the roadways while it is going for its service. This type of service would be preventative, rather than reactionary to an incident.
Since autonomous vehicles are less likely to get into vehicle crashes, it would most likely use the second option more often.
